tatiana boyko

I saw a book cover Tatiana Boyko did for the 'jungle book'

I love the simplicity of just layering different coloured shapes but it creates really nice overlays and a sense of depth to give a feeling of being deep in the jungle. Seeing this inspired me to try layering the shapes and textures I've been making for OUIL505 on photoshop to create a jungle scene.

I like her other botanical work too, the use of black in the background adds depth and really makes the colours and patterns stand out.

colours may vary exhibition

We were given an exciting opportunity to set up our own exhibition based on the prints we made for our 504 module about authors. We were given complete control over all of it, like keeping communication with 'colours may vary', making promotional posters and flyers, buying alcohol, setting up the exhibition etc. We were all split into teams - promo, booze and hang, I was in the hanging team. Our job didn't come in until the day before the exhibition where we took all the prints down to the space to set up.
It was a lot more hard work than I thought, I think it was difficult at the beginning because there was too many people and not enough direction, but after a couple of time of putting up and taking down prints we got a better idea of where prints should go and what looked good next to each other.

Three of us were also asked to make an information poster which explained what our project was as well as giving a catalogue of names to numbers of the prints in case people were interested in buying. This was quite a long process as well - getting the working right as well as the descriptions for the prints, especially as not everyone wrote down the right information so there was some guesswork involved. I was pleased with the outcome though, it looked professional, especially underneath our group photo.

I really loved the exhibition, it was really satisfying once we finished because everything looked so good up on the walls, even better than when I had seen them in our crits, I guess once it is in context everything fitted together better. I think this was a really encouraging experience for us and we should definitely aim to do more.

lucinda rogers

I really like Lucinda Rogers' use of colour to create atmosphere, the warm purple and yellow makes for a cosy, welcoming tone of voice, with only the slight use of black lines there is nothing too harsh about the image. I want to consider how I can use colour as a tool more in my work, as I often just use real-life colours rather than altering them to make a different mood.

life's a pitch - FINAL PRESENTATION

Here is our finished presentation:

Overall it went pretty well, we all had an equal input and presented well, I think our presentation made sense and we kept it pretty concise. Our feedback was that the shipping container element seemed pretty unnecessary, the fact that we only mentioned it at the beginning and then not after showed it didn't play a massive part in the company. The good element was the competition side to our idea - no one else had come up with that and it was an interesting concept to try and promote and exhibit un known illustrators, that part could work really well.
