competition brief

We have decided that for the competition element we will be sending out briefs on our website dedicated to our business. The brief will be based on what event we attend, so if we were going to a music festival we would ask for work that is based on the acts playing or just involving a general festival theme. The brief would be relatively open.

We would then chose 15 designs from what we are sent, print them out as well as 10 of each to sell, which we will sell for about £10 each. We only really be working throughout the summer period and expect to go to about 20 events during that time, so we would have to give a reasonable amount of time before we go to each event to tell contestants what the brief is.

We will be attending various types of festivals such as food, art, music, film festivals where there will hopefully be a wide range of potential customers.

presentation research

I have been researching on gov.co.uk and found that our business plan is an 'ordinary business partnership' which means  all business partners involved share responsibilities and profits as well as paying income tax on our profits.

I have also been working out the costs which I found to be a lot harder than I thought because with things like insurance it was hard to know if we needed it or how much it could even be.
Also when finding out how much everything costs it doesn't actually make sense to use the shrink wrapping because it is a lot more expensive than what we would make from sponsors for a small bit of advertising. So we are just going to make our money from selling prints instead.
Here is what I worked out cost wise:

Annual Costs
CAPITAL EXPENDITURE
Shipping container
4 computers
Bulldog clips
Display stands
Lighting
Wire
Hanging materials
To the nearest £3000 - £6000

DIRECT

OVERHEAD
Van hire (£125 per week)- £2000
Travel costs - £3000

LOCATION
Festival trader cost - £1000

A5 flyers x100 - £12

laura carlin

I love Laura Carlin's work, her use of multiple materials - collage, paint, pencil, work together so well to create abstract and rather dream-like scenes. My favourite pieces of her work come from the book she illustrated 'iron man'

I love the way she uses negative space to create atmosphere, having little bits of detail next to a big bit of texture leads the eye round the page and makes quite a lonely atmosphere within the illustration.

She transfers the same style onto her 3D work, they are just like her drawings come to life which I find really clever

I take a lot of inspiration from her process of working and her looseness within the image making but also her consideration of composition and material use to create a certain tone of voice.

preparation for presentation

For the presentation we have each assigned roles to gather relevant information

ME:
- costs
- legal status of business
- the competition brief

JOE:
- name of company
- logo
- what we will sell
- pricing

JANIN
- why we will be successful
- resources and equipment we need
- ethos and aims

JESSIE
- roles of everyone
- logistics of container, how we move and set it up
- our locations/promotion

We will keep posting what research we find to our facebook group and then organise it all into a presentation

more development

Our idea at the moment doesn't leave much space for making any profit as the only way we are getting any money is through the sales we make of the prints.
I had the idea that we could use the shape of the shipping container to our advantage and advertise on the outside. So for example, if we were exhibiting and selling at London Fashion Week, we could ask a brand who sponsors there to also sponsor us if we illustrate their brand on our container by having it shrink wrapped on.

Shrink wrapped similar to this bus:

We could have different wrapping depending on which even we go to, e.g. if we were at Wimbledon we could illustrate a tennis wear brand on our container. I feel like we could get quite a bit of money from sponsors from doing this.
